PRESENTING a LOVELY late 19th Century, EAS Douglas Hunt Scene Aquatint Engraving. Framed print "From Scent to View" by Edward Algernon Stuart Douglas (1848- 1918). 27x43 in. Published by Arthur Ackermann, 191 Regent Street, on 1st March 1889 and engraved by C.R. Stock. EAS Douglas was a British painter in both oil and watercolor of sporting images. Douglas is said to have worked in conjunction with Ackermanns for many years, who in 1887 published a set of four coursing scenes by Douglas. EAS Douglas was educated (1861) at Charterhouse School, United Kingdom. Little is known of the life of this very competent sporting painter. Between 1880 and 1892 he exhibited ten works at the Royal Academy, all of which were hunting scenes. ‘From Scent to View’ is significant. Unlike greyhounds and staghounds, which hunt by sight, foxhounds hunt by scent. This scene depicts the moment when the huntsmen, until then entirely dependent on the hounds, catch their first glimpse of the quarry.
